Polymeric peptide pigments with sequence-encoded properties.

چکیده
Melanins are a family of heterogeneous polymeric pigments that provide ultraviolet (UV) light protection, structural support, coloration, and free radical scavenging. Formed by oxidative oligomerization of catecholic small molecules, the physical properties of melanins are influenced by covalent and noncovalent disorder. We report the use of tyrosine-containing tripeptides as tunable precursors for polymeric pigments. In these structures, phenols are presented in a (supra-)molecular context dictated by the positions of the amino acids in the peptide sequence. Oxidative polymerization can be tuned in a sequence-dependent manner, resulting in peptide sequence-encoded properties such as UV absorbance, morphology, coloration, and electrochemical properties over a considerable range. Short peptides have low barriers to application and can be easily scaled, suggesting near-term applications in cosmetics and biomedicine.

Colorant Materials, Additives in Plastic Technology
Pigments and dyes are coloring substances, i.e., substances imparting a specific color to the substrate being colored (Carolin et al. 2015). Pigments and dyes are distinctly different types of colorants. A pigment is a finely divided solid which is essentially insoluble in its polymeric application medium. Pigments are incorporated by a dispersion process into the polymer, while it is in a liqu...
متن کاملDiscovery of Novel Peptidomimetics for Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor using Phage Display Technology
Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) is a neuroprotectant candidate for neurodegenerative diseases. However, there are several clinical concerns about its therapeutic applications. In the current study, we selected BDNF-mimicking small peptides from phage-displayed peptide library as alternative molecules to the clinical challenges. The peptide library was screened against BDNF receptor (Ne...
متن کاملGenetic basis of photopigment variations in human dichromats
The spectral sensitivities of the X-encoded pigments in dichromats were studied using the electroretinogram. The action spectra measured for these subjects correspond to four distinctly different X-encoded visual pigments, two different middle-wave pigments spectrally separated by 7 nm and two different long-wave pigments separated by 5 nm. Amino acid sequences were deduced from examination of ...
متن کاملA Review of the Effect of Winemaking Techniques on Phenolic Extraction in Red Wines
Am. J. Enol. Vitic. 56:3 (2005) 197 Phenolic compounds are important to red wine quality because they impact color, mouthfeel, and ageability. Although phenolics are present in grape juice, the amount is greatly increased in wine because of their greater solubility in ethanol than in purely aqueous solutions. Typical levels of the major grape phenolics present in red wine are shown in Table 1. ...
متن کاملProtein-engineered biomaterials: highly tunable tissue engineering scaffolds.
A common goal in tissue engineering is to attain the ability to tailor specific cell-scaffold interactions and thereby gain control over cell behavior. The tunable nature of protein-engineered biomaterials enables independent tailoring of a range of biomaterial properties, creating an attractive alternative to synthetic polymeric scaffolds or harvested natural scaffolds. Protein-engineered biom...
